The Ministry of Fisheries Wealth and Aquaculture Centre have recently unveiled the first edition of a manual entitled Environmental Best Management Practices for Omani Aquaculture. The manual, which is also available as a free downloadable PDF from the RAIS site, was commissioned to provide guidance to aquaculturists on issues surrounding sustainability and ecofriendly development of new and existing facilities. The manual, which was compiled by Dr. Ewen McLean, Dr. Fahad S. Ibrahim and Khalfan M. Al-Rashdi, incorporates general sections on site selection and facility construction as well as methods for managing water, solids and other effluents. Chapters on feeds and feeding include consideration of feeding methods and feed handling, use of medicated feeds, aspects of pond fertilization and best management practices or BMPs for use of wastewater and excreta. The manual incorporates sections on preventing escapees, controlling predators and general management of animal health and welfare and BMPs for facility operation and maintenance. Six appendices are integrated into the manual and these provide species and system-specific BMPs for cage culture, shrimp farming, marine bivalve cultivation, issues surrounding salinization, broodstock selection and occupational and community health and safety. The introduction to the manual outlines how BMPs should be incorporated into daily operations as well as a consideration of their limitations. The manual was designed with extension and fisheries officers in mind, providing step-by-step guidelines to standard operational procedures for monitoring and assessing environmental and sustainable production systems. As such, the manual has significant value also in offering practical advice and guidance to producers in their efforts to attain ecofriendly production.
