Successful spawning and larval rearing of goldlined sea bream

Under the direction of Dr. Fahad Ibrahim technical staff of the Ministry of Fisheries Wealth's Aquaculture Centre have recorded, for the first time on the large scale in Oman, the controlled spawning of goldlined sea bream Rhabdosargus sarba. Broodstock were collected from the wild in early January using trapping techniques, and subsequently transferred to the joint Ministry-Sultan Qaboos University aquaculture facility at al Hail, just North of the capital, Muscat. Females were induced to spawn following single injection of 200 I.U. HCG per kilogram wet weight. Treated fish were placed into tanks of 2 cubic metres with a male:female ratio of 2:1. Water quality parameters were maintained at ambient (22 °C; salinity 37 mg/L; DO2 5.0 mg/L). Spawning occurred within 48 hr of injection and eggs were fertilized "in-tank" prior to collection. Egg development was examined through to 5 days post-hatch (see photographs).

Various studies have been commenced to examine the effect of different water quality parameters upon egg hatchability, larval growth and survival.
